initial teaching alphabet foundation

Addressing Reading and Writing Disabilities

At Saint Mary’s University Literacy Clinic we use the initial teaching alphabet with research-validated intervention strategies to remediate reading and writing disabilities in:

  • School-age children (Kgtn-12th grade)
  • Undergraduate and graduate students preparing to be teachers

Our clinic is a laboratory for experienced teachers earning a master’s degree in literacy education as well as for education majors preparing to teach.

By tutoring struggling readers, they learn how to use the initial teaching alphabet to:

  • Develop phonemic awareness in young children struggling to read
  • Remediate phonological and spelling deficits in older students
  • Increase reading by an average of 2.8 grade levels in one school year

What others say...

I wanted to write to you to say thank you for all the work you have done to help children learn to read. I don’t know who I would be today without i.t.a.. Not only do I love to read for enjoyment, but I have been able to get a great education and help others.
